Emergency Services - Telecommunications

Description of Course
This intense 16 week program will present skills and knowledge identified for entry level positions in emergency telecommunications. This course is designed and focused on training the student for a successful career in the emergency telecommunication field. However, the skills and knowledge gained in this program can easily be transferred to a non-emergency telecommunications position should the student decide to explore such employment opportunities upon completion of the program.

Course & classroom instruction and training includes: 83.5 hours of classroom instruction; 30 hours of externship in telecommunication centers and police ride alongs; 20 Dispatch lab hours; simulated training in the use of 9-1-1 computer systems; participate in simulated emergency scenarios; and process calls with speed and accuracy. Students learn how to dispatch emergency personnel such as Police, Fire and Medical; Classroom instruction using the National Academy of Emergency Dispatchers (NAED) curriculum; Management of both emergency and non-emergency telephone calls; Operation of two-way radio equipment; Operation of computer aided telecommunication (CAD) software; Criminal & Civil Law; Public Safety Environment & Ethics; CPR Certification; Stress Management; Catastrophic Events

In order for students to successfully complete this course, they must become proficient in:

  • the use of computer keyboard and telecommunication software
  • strong interpersonal communication skills
  • the ability to solve problems under pressure
  • multi-tasking skills
  • developing positive customer service skills
  • crisis management
Students must also:
  • Participate and complete the 30 hour telecommunication observation and ride along program.
  • Participate in emergency service activities such as disaster drills and community education.
  • Be eligible to take & pass the National Academy of Emergency Dispatchers (NAED) certification exam.
  • Be eligible to take & pass the National Incident Management System exam.
