Assistance with Medications

Assistance with Medications is a requirement of the Idaho State Board of Nursing for Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (caregivers), who are delegated the task of assisting their client with medications. The curriculum is approved by the Idaho Division of Professional-Technical education. The course outlines specific rules and guidelines applicable to Assistive Personnel. Most course participants work within group homes, adult day programs, or assisted living facilities. Upon successful completion of the course students receive a certificate approved by the Idaho State Board of Nursing and Idaho State Department of Health and Welfare. This certificate is valid throughout the state of Idaho, excluding nursing homes and hospitals.

CPR
Dental Assisting — Fundamentals

Is it time to enhance or begin your career as a dental assistant? This course will equip you with the basic information and skill necessary to become eligible for the Dental Assisting Mastery Series of Expanded Functions. Recognized by dentists as valid preparation for entry-level positions, this course is the first step toward furthering your career in dentistry. You will gain in-depth instruction in all aspects of dental materials, cavity classification, infection control, charting, terminology, local anesthetics, and legal/ethical dental issues. Pre-requisite: Employment with a dental office.

Dental Assisting — Self-Study

Modules are taken by the student to work through at his or her own pace. This style is wonderful for the student who learns best in the quiet environment of their own home. Testing is performed with an instructor.

Dental Assisting — Fundamentals Challenge Exam

Do you feel comfortable with your skills as a dental assistant and are working in a dental office? You can challenge the self study class with this exam.


Dental Assisting — Expanded Functions Mastery Series

A minimum of six months experience as a dental assistant is required. You must be currently employed by a dentist who will sign an agreement for you to take this course and meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Currently certified by the Dental Assisting National Board.
  2. OR Graduate of an accredited dental assisting program.
  3. OR Successful completion or challenge of Dental Assisting Fundamentals.

Study Options

Directed Study: This format provides 5 hours of individualized instruction per module, plus testing.

Self Study: This format provides 2 hours of instruction per module, plus testing.

Dietary Manager

The Dietary Manger Online Training Course is a 12-month online course that combines four online training modules and scheduled practical field experience hours that will satisfy the mandatory education hours to be eligible to take DMA’s national credentialing exam. A certified dietary manager is a trained food service operations professional that manages the food service department of healthcare facilities, schools, and correctional institutions. This online distance learning course is designed for students who are looking for a career change or are currently employed in foodservice but aspire to be credentialed as a Certified Dietary Manager Certified Food Protection Professional (CDM, CFPP). Students are eligible for student DMA membership. Graduates are eligible for the credentialing exam, active DMA membership, and upon successfully completing the exam may use the CDM, CFPP credential after their name.

Although the course is primarily online, some in person attendance is required. There are 107 hours spent with a qualified Registered Dietitian (RD) and/or CDM, CFPP preceptor for in-field learning activities as well as 43 hours of quality in person RD preceptor classroom time to reinforce field learning experiences over the 3 quarterly IHCA-ICAL workshops and the Annual Convention.

EMT Basic & Advanced
Instructor Development

This course is designed to provide basic information on instructing the adult learner. This self study program was developed considering strategies applicable to primary instructors of post-secondary, professional-technical, and short term training programs. It is offered as a self study course with eight modules. The expectation is that student’s complete one module per week. Each module has a quiz and an activity, except Module 6 which has no quiz. The student will email completed assignments to the Instructor. You will be provided with the instructors contact information after you register for the class. This course is required (or an equivalent course) to instruct CNA's or the Assistance with Medication, EMT and other courses through the Post Secondary Professional Technical Schools.

IV Therapy for Nurses

There is an increasing need for nurses who are qualified to provide IV Therapy in a variety of clinical and non-clinical settings. In this course you will be instructed in general IV therapy skills and patient preparation for IV transfusions. You will also learn to select the infusion site, perform veinipunctures, initiate the IV infusions, and provide ongoing assessments of your patients.

This course is also well designed as a refresher course for those returning to the medical field.

Prerequisite: Must be an RN or LPN and must show proof of personal health insurance or sign a waiver.

Medical Coding & Billing

This course provides a basic foundation of entry level skills for the unique and challenging world of medical coding. You will be introduced to ICD-9-CM, CPT, and HCPCS, along with their applications to basic body systems and common medical or surgical procedures. This course focuses on the competencies required to earn the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) credential through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). To achieve certification, you must meet eligibility requirements and pass the certification exam. This exam is not included as part of the course. It is AHIMA's entry-level credential based upon job-analysis standards.

Medical Front Office

(4 months, 136 hrs, 34 sessions)

As the first point of patient contact, whether in person or by phone, the front-office professional is one of the most important functions in the health care system. This course teaches necessary skills for an entry-level position, including patient charting, appointment scheduling, billing and collections, basic insurance coding, payroll and medical transcription. You will also learn computer skills as well as how to maintain medical records and complete insurance forms.

Medical Math

Are you afraid of math? Have you been away from the classroom for a long time and are currently seeking entry into a health care occupation? Medical Math is your first best step. Any individual interested in continuing education in health care occupations would benefit from this course content.

Medical Terminology

The course will increase your medical office opportunities to include medical receptionist, clerk, transcriptionist, or secretary. All of these high-demand positions offer exciting opportunities and all require a working knowledge of medical terminology. This course will teach you commonly used medical terms, prefixes, and suffixes, and will allow you to practice their pronunciation, spelling, and abbreviation.

The purpose of this course is to teach the student the basic design of medical terminology. You will learn how to easily remember the meanings of 350 Latin and Greek word parts or elements. After successfully completing this course, you will be able to easily interpret and understand more than 11,000 complex medical terms. This skill and ability will provide you with a powerful foundation of knowledge for the language of medicine.

This course uses the Dean Vaughn Learning System, which is a proven system of mnemonic instruction and learning.

Medical Assistant

Nursing Assistant

Looking for an in-demand healthcare career? Nursing assistants are front-line patient care providers who perform basic nursing-care services for the ill, injured, handicapped, or disabled under the direction and supervision of licensed nurses.

The program includes 80 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of clinical experience. Once training is successfully completed, you will be eligible to take the Idaho State Nurse Aide exam to attain the status of Certified Nursing Assistant.

Paramedic

(6 months + 452 clinical hours + field internship)

Paramedics are the most highly trained medical first responders. Take your training to another level and learn everything you need to quickly assess and skillfully meet patient needs in an ever-changing emergency scene. This course trains you to provide pre-hospital care to emergency patients and prepares you for employment with fire departments, private ambulance services, police departments or hospitals.

Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)

Pharmacy Technician's job duties depend upon the pharmacy setting (either hospital or retail pharmacy) and scope of practice. Duties include but are not limited to: assist pharmacist in filling and labeling prescriptions; assist patients in dropping off and picking up prescriptions; entering prescriptions into the computer; verify that customer receives correct prescription(s); compound oral solutions, suspensions, ointments, and creams; prepackage bulk medications; screen calls for pharmacists; medication ordering; work with insurance carriers to obtain payments and refilling authority; prepare chemotherapeutic agents; compound large volumes of intravenous mixtures; preparing IV mixtures; and purchasing and billing.

Phlebotomy

In this intensive 10-week class, you will receive instruction to prepare you for working as a Phlebotomist. In the classroom, you'll be instructed on the anatomy and physiology of the vascular system. You will receive hands on instruction in how to draw blood specimens using venipuncture and capillary puncture. You will also receive instruction in the proper preparation and handling of specimens for clinical laboratory testing. Patient communication techniques, medical ethics, and legal issues will also be discussed. You must attend 90% of the classes to receive a certificate of completion.

As part of the course, you will be assigned to a healthcare facility for 40 hours of clinical experience in the laboratory. This "real world" experience allows you to work with patients and practice techniques learned in the classroom. The 40 hours will run consecutively during the lab's normal hours of operation (normally M-F, 8am - 5pm). Students must be able to adjust their schedules accordingly. Exact clinical site hours will be determined by the instructor, student, and lab directors. Students that cannot meet the 40 hour consecutive requirement should not apply.

Upon successful completion of classroom training and clinical hours, you will receive a certificate verifying eligibility to seek employment as an entry-level phlebotomy technician.

Visions Self-Study

Would you like to become more effective in assisting clients with developmental disabilities? This self-study course will provide you with information to gain the knowledge and skills to improve your communication, understanding, and care. You will study positive programming techniques, behavioral management strategies, and goal setting strategies like backward chaining.

This course is designed to meet Medicaid requirements specific to personal care attendants, ICF-MR employees, shelter home employees, job coaches, parents, special education teachers, and classroom assistants. However, anyone interested in working to support clients with developmental disabilities are encouraged to participate.

Successful completion of the course requires two pre-arranged meetings in Boise with your instructor; one at the beginning of the course and one at the end. The rest of the course is completed at home and homework is mailed to the instructor.

After registration the student will need to contact the instructor directly to arrange an appointment to receive modules and class instructions. The instructor’s number will be provided to you at registration. The course fee includes modules and all homework assignments. All course work MUST be completed 8 weeks from the first appointment with your instructor.
